Additionally, authorities have cut internet access as protests continue, according to rights groups and an Iranian diaspora news website.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian state TV has said the death toll from violent clashes with security forces\u00a0<a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/6759974.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could be as high as 26<\/a>, but it offered no further details. It reported that authorities have warned newsrooms and journalists not to cover the protests.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which is also verifying reports of media arrests, documented Masoud Kordpour\u2019s case among at least 11 others detained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freedom urged for detainees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CPJ Middle East program coordinator Sherif Mansour\u00a0<a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2022\/09\/iranian-security-forces-step-up-arrests-of-journalists-as-anti-state-protests-spread\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a statement<\/a>\u00a0called on Tehran to free all those detained and to \u201crestore the internet access that is vital to keep the public informed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s mission to the United Nations did not respond to VOA\u2019s email requesting comment.<\/p>\n<p>The CFWIJ said it had spoken with about a dozen journalists in Iran who fear repression. One of the journalists, whom Nazish did not identify because of security concerns, said she was in hiding at a friend\u2019s house after hearing of arrests of those at protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of these journalists have been arrested before, so this is not new for them. They are fully aware of the risk of covering the current protests,\u201d said Nazish of CFWIJ via email. \u201cOne journalist has told us, their news channel has clear instructions to not report the ongoing protests.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wsw__embed\">\n<figure class=\"media-image js-media-expand js-media-expand--ready\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" enhanced\" src=\"https:\/\/gdb.voanews.com\/09860000-0aff-0242-5a6c-08da9d9b75aa_w650_r1_s.jpg\" alt=\"A protester against the Iranian regime is led away by security personel at the friendly football match between Iran and Uruguay in Sankt Poelten, Austria, Sept. 23, 2022, following the death of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">A protester against the Iranian regime is led away by security personel at the friendly football match between Iran and Uruguay in Sankt Poelten, Austria, Sept. 23, 2022, following the death of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Iran has a dire media freedom record, ranking 178th out of 180 on the\u00a0<a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/country\/iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Press Freedom Index<\/a>, where 1 has the optimum conditions for journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, which compiles the index, describes Iran as \u201cone of the most repressive [countries] for journalists,\u201d with media nearly entirely under control of the regime.<\/p>\n<p>For women in media, the risks can be great. The CWFIJ said it was aware of at least 17 female journalists currently detained across Iran, including those arrested over the protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran is one of the most concerning countries, and indeed one of the most dangerous&#8221; for female journalists, Nazish said.<\/p>\n<p>With protests spreading across Iran, access to internet is being blocked or slowed, along with text messages containing Amini\u2019s name in Farsi, according to Keep it On, a coalition of digital rights groups who track internet blackouts.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press cited the Iranian telecommunications minister as saying restrictions might be imposed \u201cdue to security issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The internet shutdown is the third to be imposed on Iran in the past 12 months, according to digital rights group Access Now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in Iran are angry, and blocking the internet won\u2019t silence them,\u201d Marwa Fatafta, a Middle East policy and advocacy manager at Access Now, said in a statement. \u201cInstead of investigating the heinous death of Mahsa Amini, the Iranian regime is dialing up its repression \u2014 seeking to conceal its systematic human rights abuses against its own people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Under the radar&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With journalists who covered the protests fearing arrest, several are \u201ctrying to stay under the radar,\u201d said Nazish. Some are without passports or documents needed to be able to leave, a situation she said that leaves them &#8220;stuck between fear of repression and censorship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. issued an \u201cIran General License\u201d on Friday to try to increase support for internet access in Iran by aligning sanctions guidance with advances in digital technology.<\/p>\n<p>The step includes guidance for U.S. tech companies on offering Iranians \u201cmore options of secure, outside platforms and services,\u201d according to a\u00a0<a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0974\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are taking this step against a stark backdrop. The Iranian government has cut off access to the internet for most of its 80 million citizens to prevent them\u2014 and the world \u2014 from watching its violent crackdown on peaceful protesters,\u201d Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement. \u201cIn the face of these steps, we are going to help make sure the Iranian people are not kept isolated and in the dark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the U.S. Treasury Department\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control said Thursday that it would sanction members of Iran\u2019s police and senior officials over the death of Amini and for the suppression of protesters and opposition voices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMahsa Amini was a courageous woman whose death in morality police custody was yet another act of brutality by the Iranian regime\u2019s security forces against its own people,\u201d Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe condemn this unconscionable act in the strongest terms and call on the Iranian government to end its violence against women and its ongoing violent crackdown on free expression and assembly,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA \u2014 Iran\u2019s record of media repression and arrests is casting a chill over female journalists who want to report on mass protests.
