Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the main intergovernmental body dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis work is vital. It makes a real difference,\u201d U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said of the CSW. \u201cAnd it deserves our full support, especially when the rights of so many women and girls are under attack. The Kurdish woman was arrested in Tehran by so-called morality police for wearing her headscarf \u201cimproperly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police say she had a heart attack in custody, but her family disputes that. The family&#8217;s request for a committee of independent doctors to investigate her death was rejected by the Iranian authorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Independent probe urged<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that the so-called investigations into the death of Mahsa Amini have failed the minimum requirements of impartiality, independence and transparency,\u201d Javaid Rehman, the U.N. special rapporteur for Iran, told the meeting in a video briefing.<\/p>\n<p>He called for an independent, international investigation into her death \u2013 a call that was supported by several council members.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s ambassador sent a letter on Monday to all U.N. members urging them not to participate in Wednesday\u2019s meeting, saying it violated the U.N. Charter by interfering in Tehran\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the meeting he told reporters that Iranian law enforcement could \u201cmanage\u201d any unrest, but that it \u201cwould not do so at any cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe importance of human life and dignity is what ultimately guides our decision,\u201d Amir Saeid Iravani said without taking any questions. \u201cTherefore, the restraint displayed by Iranian law enforcement should not be [seen as] a sign of weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wsw__embed\">\n<figure class=\"media-image js-media-expand js-media-expand--ready\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" enhanced\" src=\"https:\/\/gdb.voanews.com\/091e0000-0a00-0242-3b0a-08dabd1e638c_w650_r1_s.jpg\" alt=\"FILE - Women attend a protest against the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who died while in police custody in Iran, during a rally in Tel Aviv, Oct. 29, 2022. The special rapporteur said at least 277 people, including 40 children, have been killed by security forces in the demonstrations. Thousands more have been arrested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake about it, the Islamic Republic [of Iran] is a totalitarian system that uses forced confessions and torture to stifle all dissent,\u201d actor and activist Nazanin Boniadi told council members.<\/p>\n<p>She said the future of the country can \u201conly be written by its own people on its own streets\u201d and urged international support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe international community should want what the courageous demonstrators in Iran want,\u201d Boniadi said. \u201cIt\u2019s time for us to stop abetting the Islamic Republic and support the freedom-loving people of Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Albania co-sponsored the meeting with the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iran police &#8216;ignited a fire&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Iran morality police wanted to make an example. They ignited a fire,\u201d Albanian Ambassador Ferit Hoxha said of Amini\u2019s arrest. He said now the genie of freedom is out of the bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Iranian human rights lawyer Shireen Ebadi said the people will no longer settle for anything less than a democratic and secular government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany young people in Iran were killed for freedom and democracy,\u201d she said by video. \u201cDon\u2019t let the Islamic Republic impose more grief on people\u2019s lives. We\u2019d be grateful for your standing on the right side of history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.N. Economic and Social Council is the body that elects members to the Commission on the Status of Women.
