Muslim countries meanwhile have called for the burning of the Quran to be outlawed.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"sc-eWhHU sc-iCnXOK hlxmwH cWKZjw sc-ilhFlB eYBcKq rich-text has-italic\">\n<p>Several Muslim countries continued to complain to Sweden on Sunday about a protest earlier in the week in Stockholm in which\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/sweden-man-burns-quran-outside-mosque-during-eid-al-adha\/a-66053104\">an Iraqi national set fire to a copy of the Quran<\/a>, Islam&#8217;s holy book.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s despite the\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/sweden\/t-66053585\">Swedish<\/a>\u00a0government repeatedly criticizing the protests, and pointing out that a court had ruled beforehand that police were not entitled to stop it.<\/p>\n<p>The man trod on the book and set several pages alight. Another\u00a0man, who stood next to him filming with a smartphone, had carried Swedish flags.<\/p>\n<p>Swedish authorities also later opened an investigation against the 37-year-old on suspicion of agitation.<\/p>\n<h2>Iran delays ambassadorial appointment<\/h2>\n<p>Iran\u00a0Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian said that\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran\/t-18996175\">Tehran<\/a>\u00a0had put on hold the appointment of a new ambassador to Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the administrative details had been completed, but the new diplomat would not be taking up the Stockholm post for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>Iran, which spent much of the past year violently repressing\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/in-iran-angry-pensioners-protest-inflation-government\/a-65879556\">protesters seeking more political and religious freedom<\/a>, summoned Sweden&#8217;s charge d&#8217;affaires earlier in the week to demand an explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters in Tehran also demonstrated several times, some of them burning Swedish flags in response.<\/p>\n<p>Similar demonstrations have taken place in several Muslim countries this week, including a small one in Jakarta in Indonesia on Sunday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"placeholder-image master_landscape big\">\n<div class=\"render-container\">\n<div class=\"sc-jDnxRY cYssRA sc-fGwHKD moTOB lazy-load-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lq-img loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/66095023_900.jpg\" alt=\"Jakarta, Indonesia, several Muslims sit reading copies of the Quran in front of a protest banner that they have all signed, condemning the Quran burning in Sweden earlier in the week. \" aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"hq-img loaded\" title=\"Jakarta, Indonesia, several Muslims sit reading copies of the Quran in front of a protest banner that they have all signed, condemning the Quran burning in Sweden earlier in the week. \" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/66095023_906.jpg\" alt=\"Jakarta, Indonesia, several Muslims sit reading copies of the Quran in front of a protest banner that they have all signed, condemning the Quran burning in Sweden earlier in the week. \" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"img-caption\">Indonesian protesters signed a petition on Sunday condemning Wednesday&#8217;s Quran burning in Sweden<small class=\"copyright\">Image: Donal Husni\/ZUMA\/picture alliance<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Muslim countries call for global Quran burning ban<\/h2>\n<p>Also on Sunday, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OiC), a 57-member body based in Saudi Arabia,\u00a0called for collective measures to avoid future instances of Quran burnings.<\/p>\n<p>Following what was billed as an &#8220;extraordinary&#8221; meeting of the body, it issued a statement calling for member states to &#8220;take unified and collective measures to prevent the recurrence of incidents of desecration of the&#8221; Quran.<\/p>\n<p>The body&#8217;s secretary general, Hissein Brahim Taha, &#8220;streesed the need to send a clear message&#8221; that such acts &#8220;are not mere ordinary Islamophobia incidents,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must send constant reminders to the international community regarding the urgent application of international law, which clearly prohibits any advocacy of religious hatred,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>In most Muslim countries burning the Quran is outlawed and in some, including Saudi Arabia, it can carry a public beheading\u00a0death sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq has\u00a0appealed to Sweden to return the Iraqi citizen behind the protest to face trial there.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/sweden-muslim-countries-denounce-iraqi-mans-quran-burning\/a-66069592\">Turkey has also used the incident to again question Sweden&#8217;s NATO accession bid<\/a>, having already\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/turkey-becomes-last-nato-member-to-ratify-finlands-entry-bid\/a-65182070\">held up fellow Nordic applicant Finland for months<\/a>\u00a0amid\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russias-war-in-ukraine\/t-60931789\">Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Sweden condemns Quran burning protest again<\/h2>\n<p>The Swedish government condemned the protests again on Sunday, both in a public statement and in an email to a Swedish newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Sweden, freedom of expression enjoys strong protection. But naturally this does not mean that the government supports every opinion that is expressed. Public gatherings that are entirely legal can also be polarizing and offensive. Demonstrations like that held on Wednesday are just that,&#8221; the Swedish Foreign Ministry said in a statement explaining that the country was introducing additional border security steps in response to the week&#8217;s events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can be noted, for example, that the man now being investigated for the offense of agitation against a national or ethnic group following Wednesday\u2019s events is an Iraqi national who only has a temporary residence permit in Sweden,&#8221; the statement also said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"placeholder-image master_landscape big\">\n<div class=\"render-container\">\n<div class=\"sc-jDnxRY cYssRA sc-fGwHKD moTOB lazy-load-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lq-img loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/66059880_900.jpg\" alt=\"A man stands with a megaphone, holding aloft a copy of the Quran, outside a mosque in Stockholm.
