{"id":113394,"date":"2023-09-25T07:17:28","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T12:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/?p=113394"},"modified":"2023-09-25T07:17:28","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T12:17:28","slug":"iran-says-28-islamic-state-members-held-over-tehran-plot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/en\/2023\/09\/25\/iran-says-28-islamic-state-members-held-over-tehran-plot\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran Says 28 Islamic State Members Held Over Tehran Plot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dateline\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-113395 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Revolutionary-Guard-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Revolutionary-Guard-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Revolutionary-Guard-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Revolutionary-Guard-24x16.jpg 24w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Revolutionary-Guard-36x24.jpg 36w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Revolutionary-Guard-48x32.jpg 48w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Revolutionary-Guard.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>VOA \u2014 TEHRAN \u2014 <\/span>Iranian authorities have arrested 28 people linked to the Islamic State group for plotting to target Tehran during the anniversary of last year&#8217;s protests, the intelligence ministry said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The protests erupted after the death in custody on September 16, 2022, of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd arrested for allegedly flouting the Islamic republic&#8217;s strict dress code for women.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In recent days, during a series of simultaneous operations in Tehran, Alborz and West Azerbaijan provinces, several terrorist bases and team houses were attacked, and 28 members of the said terrorist network were arrested,&#8221; the ministry said on its website.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These elements are affiliated to the professional crime group of Daesh (Islamic State group) and some of them have a history of accompanying takfiris in Syria or being active in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Kurdistan region of Iraq,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>In Shiite-dominated Iran, the term &#8220;takfiri&#8221; generally refers to jihadists or proponents of radical Sunni Islam.<\/p>\n<p>The intelligence ministry said two security personnel were wounded during the arrest operations, and a number of bombs, firearms, suicide vests and communications devices were seized.<\/p>\n<p>It said it had neutralized a plot to &#8220;carry out 30 simultaneous terrorist explosions in densely populated centers of Tehran to undermine security and incite riots and protests on the anniversary of last year&#8217;s riots.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The months-long demonstrations saw hundreds of people killed, including dozens of security personnel, in what Tehran called &#8220;riots&#8221; fomented by foreign governments and &#8220;hostile media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, a court sentenced to death a Tajik IS member convicted over a deadly gun attack on a Shi\u2019ite Muslim shrine in August.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on the Shah Cheragh mausoleum in Shiraz, capital of Fars province in the south, came less than a year after a mass shooting at the same site that was later claimed by the IS group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA \u2014 TEHRAN \u2014 Iranian authorities have arrested 28 people linked to the Islamic State group for plotting to target Tehran during the anniversary of last year&#8217;s protests, the intelligence ministry said on Sunday.
