{"id":115496,"date":"2024-01-02T05:38:53","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T10:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/?p=115496"},"modified":"2024-01-02T05:38:53","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T10:38:53","slug":"worlds-carbon-emissions-could-start-to-fall-for-first-time-in-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/en\/2024\/01\/02\/worlds-carbon-emissions-could-start-to-fall-for-first-time-in-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"World&#8217;s carbon emissions could start to fall for first time in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"t-content__chapo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-115497 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/coal-fired-Yenikoy-power-station-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/coal-fired-Yenikoy-power-station-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/coal-fired-Yenikoy-power-station-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/coal-fired-Yenikoy-power-station-24x16.png 24w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/coal-fired-Yenikoy-power-station-36x24.png 36w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/coal-fired-Yenikoy-power-station-48x32.png 48w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/coal-fired-Yenikoy-power-station.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>VOA \u2014 Global carbon emissions may have peaked in 2023 \u2013 the hottest year in history \u2013 as efforts to step up renewable energy and step back from fossil fuels show signs of promise.<\/p>\n<div class=\"t-content__body u-clearfix\" data-empty-p=\"false\">\n<p>Climate experts are increasingly hopeful that 2024 could mark the beginning of a fall in emissions produced by the energy sector \u2013 a milestone the International Energy Agency (IEA) had earlier predicated would be met by the middle of this decade.<\/p>\n<p>The energy sector is to blame for about three-quarters of global greenhouse emissions, and an overall emissions peak is needed in order for the world to achieve net zero by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The UN\u2019s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says the net zero emissions target is the only way to cap temperature rises at 1.5\u00b0Celsius and avoid the most disastrous consequences of the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Richer countries, however, would be expected to reach net zero much earlier.<\/p>\n<h2>Question of \u2018how soon\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/world-energy-outlook-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Energy Outlook 2023<\/a>, the IEA pointed to a peak in energy-related emissions \u201cby 2025\u201d partly as a result of the energy crisis brought on by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a question of \u2018if\u2019; it\u2019s just a matter of \u2018how soon\u2019 \u2013 and the sooner the better for all of us,\u201d said IEA executive director Fatih Birol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-global-co2-emissions-could-peak-as-soon-as-2023-iea-data-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Analysis<\/a>\u00a0of the IEA\u2019s own data by the Carbon Brief climate policy website found that peak would happen two years sooner \u2013 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It also found that coal, oil and gas use would peak before 2030 thanks to the \u201cunstoppable\u201d growth of low-carbon technologies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/environment\/20231213-cop26-draft-climate-deal-calls-for-transitioning-away-from-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Nations agree historic deal to &#8216;transition away&#8217; from fossil fuels<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Chinese renewables<\/h2>\n<p>Efforts by China, the world&#8217;s biggest carbon emitter, to drive growth in low-carbon technologies has also helped fuel the decline of the fossil fuel economy.<\/p>\n<p>A poll published last month by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (<a href=\"https:\/\/energyandcleanair.org\/analysis-chinas-emissions-set-to-fall-in-2024-after-record-growth-in-clean-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CREA<\/a>), a thinktank based in Helsinki, showed China\u2019s own emissions were on course to peak before 2030.<\/p>\n<p>This was despite the country\u2019s approval of dozens of new coal-fired power stations to meet rising energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>China was among 118 signatories of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/environment\/20231202-nations-rally-behind-renewables-with-pledges-to-triple-capacity-by-2030\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">global plan<\/a>\u00a0to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 that was agreed in December at the UN\u2019s Cop28 climate talks in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>CREA&#8217;s lead analyst Lauri Myllyvirta said that with renewables capable of meeting new energy demands, China&#8217;s emissions would likely go into a &#8220;structural decline&#8221; from 2024.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/environment\/20231209-cop28-mary-robinson-urges-politicians-to-make-science-a-force-of-nature\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mary Robinson urges politicians to make science a force of nature<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Hottest year<\/h2>\n<p>In July 2023, global temperatures shot up to their highest point ever recorded, with sea surface temperatures also warming the oceans to 0.51\u00b0C above the 1991-2020 average.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Burgess, deputy director at the European Commission&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus<\/a>\u00a0Climate Change Service, said the earth had \u201cnot been this warm for the last 120,000 years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the World Meteorological Organisation (<a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/2023-shatters-climate-records-major-impacts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WMO<\/a>) described 2023 as &#8220;a deafening cacophony of broken records&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>With greenhouse gases and global temperatures at a record high, the WMO warned that extreme weather has been leaving \u201ca trail of devastation and despair\u201d as it called for urgent global action.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA \u2014 Global carbon emissions may have peaked in 2023 \u2013 the hottest year in history \u2013 as efforts to step up renewable energy and step back from fossil fuels show signs of promise.
