But some countries are still seeing a rise in tobacco use.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"sc-lltjXc sc-bZCZoC sc-iAfmwU sc-khksUn bVYbfQ VcgPo gQifRJ jwGQNa sc-fJoDng UsQbM rich-text has-italic has-italic\">\n<p>Big Tobacco&#8217;s efforts to keep people smoking have been failing, with the number of people across the world using tobacco falling dramatically in a generation, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/world-health-organization\/t-38396203\">World Health Organization (WHO).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One in five people now smokes or indulges\u00a0in other tobacco consumption\u00a0versus one in three in 2000, it said, while warning that more still needed to be done to wean people from their addiction to the health-damaging\u00a0substance.<\/p>\n<h2>What did the WHO say?<\/h2>\n<p>In its\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"External link \u2014 global report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240088283\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">global report<\/a>, the WHO\u00a0said 1.25 billion people aged 15 or over used tobacco in 2022 versus 1.36 billion in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The study said tobacco use was on the way\u00a0to falling\u00a0further by 2030 to around 1.2 billion people, despite the expected growth in the world population.<\/p>\n<p>It said\u00a0Southeast Asia and Europe had the largest proportion of smokers,\u00a0with roughly a quarter of the population still addicted to the tobacco habit.<\/p>\n<p>Tobacco use was still on the rise in a few countries,\u00a0including\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/egypt\/t-18332328\">Egypt,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/jordan\/t-39527586\">Jordan<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/indonesia\/t-63713737\">Indonesia,<\/a>\u00a0according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>In another worrying statistic, the report said that on average, around 10%\u00a0of 13- to 15-year-olds globally use one or more types of tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>That amounts to at least 37 million adolescents, including at least 12 million who use new smokeless tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p>The report stressed these numbers were an underestimate since more than 70 countries provide no data.<\/p>\n<h2>Huge killer<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Good progress has been made in tobacco control in recent years, but there is no time for complacency,&#8221; said Dr. R\u00fcdiger Krech, director of the WHO Department of Health Promotion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m astounded at the depths the tobacco industry will go to pursue profits at the expense of countless lives,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We see that the minute a government thinks they have won the fight against tobacco, the tobacco industry seizes the opportunity to manipulate health policies and sell their deadly products,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO warned that tobacco-related deaths were expected to remain high for years to come despite the decline, with a three-decade wait for a reduction in deaths even if user numbers were falling.<\/p>\n<p>Tobacco use is estimated to kill more than 8\u00a0million people each year, including an estimated 1.3 million nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke, WHO statistics show.<\/p>\n<p>According to the US Centers for Disease Control, smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes\u00a0and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), among other health problems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DW \u2014 Just one in five people across the globe is still lighting up or otherwise consuming tobacco, the UN&#8217;s health agency says.
