\"\"DW \u2014 The head of Iran’s atomic energy agency has announced the construction of a powerful reactor at the Isfahan nuclear research center. It’s the latest of several similar plans that Tehran has made public in recent days.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Iran<\/a>\u00a0said on Monday that it was building a fourth\u00a0nuclear<\/a>\u00a0research reactor in the central city of Isfahan, days after announcing the construction a new nuclear power plant complex in the south of the country.<\/p>\n

“Today, the process of pouring concrete for the foundation of the reactor started at the Isfahan site,” Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.<\/p>\n

IRNA described the new 10-megawatt reactor as a “research reactor,” and said it would have a variety of applications including fuel and nuclear material tests and the production of industrial radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals. The Isfahan nuclear research center\u00a0is already home to three reactors.<\/p>\n

The country’s nuclear program\u00a0has been\u00a0criticized internationally<\/a>, with\u00a0experts outside of the country<\/a>\u00a0concerned that the program ultimately seeks to\u00a0build nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Iran, meanwhile, says it has no such intentions and that its nuclear program is for civilian use only.<\/p>\n

Iran faces a series of US sanctions dating back to Donald Trump’s 2018\u00a0withdrawal from an international deal brokered in\u00a02015 that aimed to stop Iran’s purported nuclear ambitions.<\/p>\n

Iran seeks capacity to rival major nuclear power players<\/h2>\n

In January, the director general of the UN’s\u00a0International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)<\/a>\u00a0nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said Iran was “restricting” cooperation with the agency and called the Iran nuclear situation “frustrating.”<\/p>\n

Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said last Thursday that a new nuclear power plant complex was being built in Sirik, and that it would\u00a0have a combined daily production capacity of 5,000 megawatts.<\/p>\n

“We must reach the production capacity of 20,000 megawatts of nuclear power in the country by the year 2041,” Eslami said during a visit to the region with President Ebrahim Raisi.<\/p>\n

The United States, France, China, Russia and South Korea are the only five countries in the world that currently have more than 20,000 megawatts of nuclear capacity installed.<\/p>\n

Iran currently has one operational nuclear power plant, in Bushehr, creating about 3,000 megawatts.<\/p>\n

According to IRNA, the Sirik plants should be operational by 2031.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
