{"id":78888,"date":"2020-01-25T16:38:46","date_gmt":"2020-01-25T21:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/persian-heritage.com\/wordpress\/?p=78888"},"modified":"2020-04-15T09:13:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-15T14:13:30","slug":"34-us-troops-treated-for-brain-injuries-following-iran-missile-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/en\/2020\/01\/25\/34-us-troops-treated-for-brain-injuries-following-iran-missile-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"34 US Troops Treated for Brain Injuries Following Iran Missile Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78900 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/persian-heritage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/EnglishWEBAP_20013475155433-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">VOA &#8211; PENTAGON &#8211; The Pentagon said Friday that 34 U.S. troops\u00a0had been\u00a0diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries or concussions as a result of Iran&#8217;s missile attack on bases in Iraq earlier this month.\u00a0 Almost half have returned to duty in\u00a0Iraq\u00a0but the rest continue to\u00a0be treated\u00a0in Germany or the United\u00a0States.\u00a0 \u201cThese are mainly outpatient treatments,\u201d\u00a0chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters, cautioning that the number of troops suffering as a result of the missile strikes could change.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a snapshot in time,\u201d he said, citing the nature of brain injuries and the fact that symptoms do not always present themselves right\u00a0away.\u00a0 He also said it\u00a0was a \u201cdistinct possibility\u201d that more of the injured service members could be brought back the U.S. to continue their care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">U.S. officials initially said no U.S. troops\u00a0had been\u00a0hurt\u00a0in\u00a0the January 8 missile attack on the\u00a0al-Asad\u00a0air base\u00a0in Iraq.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Last week, U.S.\u00a0military\u00a0officials said 11 troops\u00a0had been\u00a0evacuated from Iraq with concussion-like symptoms.\u00a0Since then, officials had repeatedly declined to provide updates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Trump: &#8216;Not very serious&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">On Wednesday, President Donald Trump appeared to downplay the severity of the injuries.\u00a0&#8220;I heard that they had headaches and a couple of other things, but I would\u00a0say\u00a0and I can report it is not very serious,&#8221; he said during\u00a0his\u00a0trip to Davos, Switzerland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t consider them very serious injuries relative to other injuries I have seen,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I&#8217;ve seen people with no legs and no arms.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">The Pentagon said Friday that of the 34 troops diagnosed with brain injuries or concussions, 17 were evacuated to medical facilities in Germany and one to Kuwait.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">The service member sent to Kuwait returned to duty in Iraq.
