VOA – WASHINGTON – The White House on Wednesday\u00a0objected to the publication of a book written by\u00a0former\u00a0White House\u00a0national security adviser John Bolton that\u00a0depicts\u00a0President Donald\u00a0Trump as\u00a0having played\u00a0a central role in a pressure campaign\u00a0on Ukraine.\u00a0 A letter from the White House’s National Security Council to\u00a0Bolton’s attorney said the manuscript appeared to contain\u00a0“significant amounts of classified information” and could not be\u00a0published in its current form. Some material was considered\u00a0top\u00a0secret,\u00a0according to the letter, which was seen by Reuters.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Under federal law and the nondisclosure agreements your\u00a0client signed as a condition for gaining access to classified\u00a0information, the manuscript may not be published or otherwise\u00a0disclosed without the deletion of this classified information,”\u00a0the letter said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Reports about the contents of Bolton’s book appear to boost\u00a0the Democrats’ case\u00a0against Trump at his trial. Democrats want\u00a0to call Bolton, a foreign policy hawk in several Republican\u00a0administrations, to testify,\u00a0but many Republican senators have so\u00a0far resisted any new witnesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A spokeswoman for Bolton had no comment. Neither his\u00a0publisher nor lawyer immediately responded to requests for\u00a0comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, senators began the first of two planned days of posing\u00a0questions to both Trump’s legal team and the Democratic\u00a0lawmakers in the House of Representatives who have served as\u00a0prosecutors in the trial on charges of abusing power and\u00a0obstructing Congress arising from his request that Ukraine\u00a0investigate political rival Joe Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The questioning precedes\u00a0a vote later in the week on whether\u00a0to call\u00a0witnesses,\u00a0including Bolton, as Democrats have sought.\u00a0Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the chamber, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told senators on\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0that\u00a0he did not have the\u00a051\u00a0votes\u00a0needed\u00a0to block Democrats from\u00a0calling witnesses because some Republicans remained uncommitted,\u00a0several media outlets reported.\u00a0Allowing\u00a0witnesses such as Bolton could inflict political damage on the\u00a0Republican president as he seeks re-election on November\u00a03.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Trump lashed out at Bolton on Twitter. He said Bolton\u00a0“couldn’t get approved for the Ambassador to the U.N. years ago,\u00a0couldn’t get approved for anything since, ‘begged’ me for a\u00a0non\u00a0Senate\u00a0approved job” and added that “if I listened to him, we\u00a0would be in World War Six by now.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Trump added that Bolton, who left his White House post in\u00a0September, “goes out and IMMEDIATELY writes a nasty & untrue\u00a0book. All Classified National Security. Who would do this?”<\/p>\n
Bolton’s version<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n Contradicting Trump’s version of events, Bolton, in a manuscript for a book yet to be published, wrote\u00a0that the president told him he\u00a0wanted to freeze $391 million in security aid to Ukraine until\u00a0Kyiv pursued investigations into Democrats, including Biden and\u00a0the former vice president’s son Hunter Biden,\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n Bolton’s allegations go to the heart of the impeachment\u00a0charges. Democrats have said Trump abused his power by using the\u00a0security aid\u00a0\u2014\u00a0passed by Congress to help Ukraine battle\u00a0Russia-backed separatists\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as leverage to get a foreign power\u00a0to smear a political rival.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Biden is a leading candidate for the Democratic nomination\u00a0to face Trump in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n Trump has denied telling Bolton he sought to use the aid as\u00a0leverage to get Ukraine to investigate the\u00a0Bidens. Trump has\u00a0said he fired Bolton. Bolton, a foreign policy hawk who served\u00a0as a temporary “recess appointee” as American ambassador to the\u00a0United Nations under Republican former President George W.
