VOA News \u2014 Iran is warning the United States against threatening its tankers carrying fuel to Venezuela, where gasoline and oil are in desperately short supply despite Venezuela being a major oil production center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As many as five\u00a0Iranian\u00a0ships\u00a0loaded\u00a0with gasoline\u00a0are\u00a0believed to\u00a0be\u00a0on their way to the\u00a0South\u00a0American\u00a0country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S.\u00a0sanctions\u00a0forbid Iran from selling oil and the U.S. is also\u00a0pressuring\u00a0all\u00a0countries\u00a0against\u00a0supplying\u00a0fuel\u00a0to\u00a0Venezuela, as part of\u00a0Washington’s\u00a0efforts to drive\u00a0President\u00a0Nicolas\u00a0Maduro\u00a0from power.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iranian\u00a0Foreign Minister\u00a0Javad\u00a0Zarif\u00a0wrote a letter Sunday to United\u00a0Nations\u00a0Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about Tehran\u2019s concerns\u00a0over\u00a0whatever action the U.S. might take.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran \u201creserves its right to take all appropriate and necessary measures and decisive action…to secure its legitimate rights and interests against such bullying policies and unlawful practices,\u201d Zarif\u00a0wrote.\u00a0\u201cThis hegemonic gunboat diplomacy\u00a0seriously\u00a0threatens freedom of international commerce and navigation and the free flow of energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Zarif said Iran\u00a0would\u00a0consider any \u201ccoercive measures\u201d by the U.S. as a\u00a0\u201cdangerous\u00a0escalation.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iranian officials delivered a similar message to the Swiss ambassador in Tehran who handles all U.S. interests in Iran.<\/p>\n

U.S.\u00a0officials\u00a0have not yet said\u00a0specifically\u00a0how they plan to respond\u00a0if Iran is sending gasoline\u00a0to Venezuela.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the\u00a0State\u00a0Department,\u00a0Treasury, and Coast Guard warned all global shipping companies and governments\u00a0not to help Iran,\u00a0or anyone else,\u00a0dodge\u00a0sanctions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S.\u00a0President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0re-imposed\u00a0sanctions\u00a0on Iran when he pulled the U.S. out of the 2015\u00a0nuclear\u00a0deal, leaving the Iranian economy in shambles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.S. has also imposed a variety of\u00a0sanctions\u00a0against Venezuela, whose economy was\u00a0destroyed\u00a0by a drop in global oil\u00a0prices, corruption, and Maduro\u2019s\u00a0failed socialist policies.\u00a0The\u00a0sanctions\u00a0have made it\u00a0difficult\u00a0for Venezuela to send crude oil to refineries.\u00a0<\/p>\n
