The governors of Texas and Virginia have imposed states of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Some big city mayors, such as San Francisco&#8217;s London Breed, say their curfews are indefinite.<\/p>\n<p>Similar events played out in many cities where largely peaceful protests later turned into scenes of some people setting fires and smashing storefronts. Shortly after, the Associated Press reported that the entire Washington, DC National Guard had called in to help with the protest response. District firefighters said one of the blazes extinguished was in the basement of the historic St. John&#8217;s Episcopal Church, just blocks from the White House.<\/p>\n<p>National Guard troops also worked with police in Atlanta to enforce an overnight curfew in the southern city. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms earlier Sunday fired two police officers and put three others on desk duty until accusations of excessive use of force Saturday night could be reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>There was no curfew in New York City, where during the day police kept a distance from protesters but at night there were instances of officers charging into crowds to clear areas and make arrests, as well as protesters throwing objects at police.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embedded-entity article\" role=\"group\">\n<article data-embed-button=\"wysiwyg_video\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"7d748547-899f-4d20-af42-6a80e497935f\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The demonstrations began Tuesday in Minneapolis, where George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died after being held handcuffed, face down, with a police officer\u2019s knee on the back of his neck for more than eight minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The marchers say they are protesting not just harsh police treatment of black men and women, but also systemic racism in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The officer who held down Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter four days later. He, and three other officers who were present and did not intervene, were fired Tuesday. Chauvin is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon in Minneapolis. Acevedo said Floyd was well-known by many of the city\u2019s officers.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters in Minneapolis and across the country have taken up the familiar chant \u201cNo Justice, No Peace.&#8221;\u00a0Others echoed Floyd\u2019s \u201cI can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump has blamed most of the violence during protests on \u201cAntifa and other radical left-wing groups,\u201d and offered federal military assistance to Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>Media reports say Trump was taken on Friday night by the Secret Service to a White House underground bunker out of an abundance of caution for a brief period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe White House does not comment on security protocols and decisions,\u201d a White House spokesman, Judd Deere, told VOA when asked about the reports.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embedded-entity div\" role=\"group\">\n<div data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"4a1aaed4-8c5c-473f-a0fa-477f89d21b27\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2020-05\/AP_20152645837933.jpg?itok=lYSWtrx5\" alt=\"Jessica Knutson, and her daughter Abigail, 3, place flowers at a memorial to George Floyd, May 31, 2020, in Minneapolis. \" width=\"737\" height=\"491\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption>Jessica Knutson, and her daughter Abigail, 3, place flowers at a memorial to George Floyd, May 31, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, visited the site of one of the protests Sunday and spoke with African Americans in Wilmington, in his home state of Delaware. He asked the protesters not to turn to violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a nation in pain right now, but we must not allow this pain to destroy us. As President, I will help lead this conversation,\u201d Biden tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>He also criticized the violence in a separate emailed statement, saying: \u201cProtesting such brutality is right and necessary. But burning down communities and needless destruction is not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General William Barr called for an end to the violence in his own statement Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe continued violence and destruction of property endangers the lives and livelihoods of others, and interferes with the rights of peaceful protesters, as well as all other citizens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also undercuts the urgent work that needs to be done \u2013 through constructive engagement between affected communities and law enforcement leaders \u2013 to address legitimate grievances. Somali-American business owner Ahmed Siyad Shafi\u2019i told VOA that vandals attacked all his of his stores overnight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey broke the glass, the doors, the windows,\u201d he said via Skype, \u201cand take whatever they can take.\u201d Shafi\u2019i, the owner of a restaurant and clothing store in South Minneapolis, called it \u201cunacceptable\u201d for anyone to destroy personal property and suggested peaceful protests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA \u2014 Protesters took to the streets in cities across the United States for a sixth night Sunday to vent their anger over the death of George Floyd and call for change, as police in many areas sought to enforce overnight curfews.
