\"\"VOA \u2014 Iran has issued an arrest warrant for U.S. President Donald Trump, whom the Islamic Republic accuses of being involved in a January drone strike that killed a top Iranian commander.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The warrant, for\u00a0charges of \u201cmurder and terrorism,\u201d\u00a0was\u00a0announced Monday by Tehran prosecutor Ali\u00a0Alqasimehr, according to the state-run IRNA news agency\u00a0and other media.\u00a0Alqasimehr\u00a0said that Iran requested an Interpol \u201cred notice\u201d for Trump and 35 others. Under a red notice, which is the highest alert that the international law enforcement organization puts out,\u00a0nations\u00a0can make arrests on behalf of the requesting country\u00a0but\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0forced to\u00a0take action.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Interpol\u00a0noted\u00a0in a statement that its constitution barred it from “any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cInterpol would not consider requests of this nature,” the organization added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0special\u00a0representative for Iran,\u00a0Brian Hook,\u00a0dismissed the warrant\u00a0during\u00a0a news conference in Saudi Arabia.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This is [of] a political nature. This has nothing to do with national security, international peace or promoting stability,\u201d said Hook. \u201cIt\u00a0is\u00a0a propaganda stunt that no one takes seriously.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iranian Gen.\u00a0Qassem\u00a0Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike<\/a> Jan. 3, spurring an Iranian missile strike on\u00a0U.S.\u00a0troops in Iraq a few days later. Soleimani was widely popular in Iran, but U.S. officials considered the general responsible for the deaths of American diplomats and soldiers in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The news\u00a0of the arrest warrant\u00a0came a day after Hook advocated for the renewal of a United Nations arms embargo<\/a> on Iran,\u00a0in an interview with\u00a0the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

“If we let it expire, you can be certain that what Iran has been doing in the dark, it will do in broad daylight and then some,\u201d said Hook. The embargo is set to expire in October.\u00a0<\/p>\n
