Trump wore the\u00a0face covering\u00a0as he toured a North Carolina laboratory where\u00a0key components\u00a0are being manufactured for\u00a0a\u00a0COVID-19 vaccine developed by\u00a0Novavax.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI trust all Americans to do the right thing,\u00a0but we strongly advise everyone to especially, especially focus on maintaining a social distance, maintain a rigorous hygiene, avoid crowded gatherings and indoor bars and wear masks when appropriate,\u201d Trump\u00a0told a group of reporters traveling with him just\u00a0before\u00a0his tour of the Fujifilm\u00a0Diosynth\u00a0Biotechnologies Innovation Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing\u2019s happened like this since the end of World War\u00a0II,\u201d\u00a0the president\u00a0said\u00a0of the billions of dollars being spent in the global race to produce and mass deploy a vaccine in record time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before\u00a0the tour of the plant, Trump spoke to\u00a0several dozen North Carolina politicians, scientists, White House officials, journalists and Secret Service agents, Trump was the only person not wearing a mask.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The president who has faced criticism for what is perceived as a belated and inadequate response by the federal government to the coronavirus pandemic, said\u00a0the\u00a0U.S. states\u00a0\u201clargely had what they needed\u201d but that all of them \u201care not out of the woods.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0defended\u00a0his administration\u2019s response to the pandemic,\u00a0despite\u00a0the U.S.\u00a0reporting the largest number of coronavirus cases and deaths\u00a0in the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe report our cases. Most of the world doesn\u2019t,\u201d Trump\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The United States\u00a0has conducted more than 52 million tests,\u00a0the president\u00a0said,\u00a0adding,\u00a0\u201cnobody\u2019s even close.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump said U.S. officials are monitoring caseloads in Latin America, a region of\u00a0particular concern.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have some very, very highly infected countries outside of our borders,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The mortality rate for\u00a0U.S.\u00a0COVID-19 patients\u00a0older than\u00a018 is 85% lower than it was in April, according to the president, giving credit to better therapies and improved knowledge about the coronavirus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the past week, the disease killed more than 1,000 Americans a day for five straight days, according to the COVID Tracking Project<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the climbing number of cases, Trump said Monday that\u00a0\u201ca\u00a0lot of\u00a0the\u00a0governors should be opening up states that they\u2019re not opening.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will achieve a victory over the virus by unleashing American scientific genius,\u201d\u00a0he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s\u00a0Monday\u00a0visit\u00a0came less than 100 days before the November 3\u00a0presidential election and less than six weeks before absentee mail-in ballots are sent to voters in North Carolina,\u00a0which is seen as a\u00a0key battleground state.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Polls, including one released Monday morning, show\u00a0the incumbent\u00a0trailing\u00a0presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden\u00a0in the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0carried\u00a0North Carolina\u00a0in 2016,\u00a0helping him achieve\u00a0an Electoral College victory.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The facility Trump visited, near\u202fRaleigh,\u202fis to\u00a0start producing a\u00a0batch of\u00a0vaccine\u00a0to be used in a clinical trial of\u202fas many as 30,000 test subjects this fall.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fujifilm\u00a0Diosynth\u202fis manufacturing the vaccine for\u202fNovavax, a company in\u202fGaithersburg, Maryland, that\u202fdeveloped\u202fit.\u202fNovavax\u00a0was\u202fawarded $1.6 billion from the federal government as part of an effort to speed up coronavirus vaccine development.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Trump\u202fadministration\u202flaunched what it calls\u202fOperation\u202fWarp Speed,\u202fa\u202fprogram under\u202fwhich\u202fmultiple\u202fcoronavirus\u202fvaccines are being\u202fdeveloped\u202fsimultaneously\u202fwith the hope of\u202fhaving 300 million safe and effective\u202fdoses\u202fready by January.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

While\u202fTrump\u202fwas in North\u202fCarolina,\u202fVice\u202fPresident\u202fMike Pence was in\u202fMiami,\u202fwhere clinical trials of another vaccine jointly\u202fdeveloped\u202fby The\u202fNational Institutes of Health and the\u00a0Moderna\u00a0Inc.\u202fbegan\u202fMonday.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s\u202fa historic day, a day when we begin in earnest to work on a vaccine,” Pence said.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0health experts say it\u202fsometimes\u202fcan take\u202fyears for a safe,\u00a0effective vaccine against a disease to\u202fbe\u202fsuccessfully developed.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Food and Drug\u202fAdministration\u202fchief\u202fDr. Stephen Hahn was with\u202fPence in Miami and told reporters the FDA “will not cut corners” to evaluate a vaccine.\u202f\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
