Stupid people may not know it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Trump suggested delaying this year&#8217;s presidential election, alleging on Twitter, without evidence, that mailed ballots, which take longer to count, would make the 2020 presidential balloting the \u201cmost INACCURATE &amp; FRAUDULENT Election in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republican president added, \u201cIt will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1288818160389558273&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.voanews.com%2F2020-usa-votes%2Ftrump-suggests-delaying-us-presidential-election&amp;siteScreenName=VOANews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=223fc1c4%3A1596143124634&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1288818160389558273\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The president does not have the power to delay the election. Under the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the power to choose the timing of the election. And by law it is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers were quick to reject any notion the election could or would be delayed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever in the history of the Congress, through wars, depressions and the Civil War, have we ever not had a federally scheduled election on time, and we\u2019ll find a way to do that again this November 3rd,\u201d Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told WNKY-TV in his home state of Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the Senate\u2019s Judiciary Committee, Lindsey Graham, said that while he was worried about election fraud, that did not warrant postponement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelaying the election is not the right answer,\u201d Graham told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There will be no delay\u201d of this year\u2019s presidential election, tweeted Representative Rodney Davis of Illinois.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-1&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1288856434243928067&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.voanews.com%2F2020-usa-votes%2Ftrump-suggests-delaying-us-presidential-election&amp;siteScreenName=VOANews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=223fc1c4%3A1596143124634&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1288856434243928067\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cCongress sets the election date, and it should not be changed. It will be held on November 3rd, as planned and required by law,\u201d added Davis, who is the ranking Republican on the House Administration Committee, which has jurisdiction over the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>This is not an idea anyone, especially the president, should float, cautioned Ari Fleischer, who was a White House press secretary in the administration of President George W. Bush, a Republican.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that the president was attempting to \u201cdivert from his abject failure in the coronavirus crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded by tweeting Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution: \u201cThe Congress may determine the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Election officials, civil rights groups and historians also criticized the president\u2019s suggestion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Mr. President. No. You don&#8217;t have the power to move the election. Nor should it be moved,\u201d tweeted Federal Election Commissioner Ellen Weintraub, a Democratic appointee. \u201cStates and localities are asking you and Congress for funds so they can properly run the safe and secure elections all Americans want. They are using coronavirus as their means to try to institute universal mail-in voting, which means sending every registered voter a ballot whether they asked for one or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gidley, in a statement to VOA, added that \u201cvoter rolls are notoriously full of bad addresses for people who have moved, are noncitizens, or are even deceased. Universal mail-in voting invites chaos and severe delays in results, as proven by the New York congressional primary, where we still don\u2019t know who won after more than a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president\u2019s baseless attacks on the integrity of mail-in voting are grossly irresponsible and must end before any further damage to public confidence is done,\u201d said Michael Abramowitz, president of Freedom House, a U.S. government-funded organization focused on democracy, political freedom and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is extremely unusual, in the United States or anywhere in the world, for an incumbent leader to predict fraud in his own bid for reelection,\u201d noted Abramowitz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a desperate attempt to distract attention from the worsening COVID-19 crisis and an imploding economy,\u201d said presidential historian David Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Akron.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"452ba1d4-5789-42ef-b3c6-cfba4c12e3bc\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2020-05\/image002.png?itok=0r5SoSe3\" alt=\"Who can vote by mail in the US\" width=\"737\" height=\"737\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTrump has attempted to destroy confidence in American institutions and norms from the very beginning, even right after the 2016 election \u2014 an election he won \u2014 by claiming falsely that millions of people voted illegally. He knows he may well lose in 2020 but is trying to get his supporters not to believe the results.
