\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have anything to do with Democrats, Republican or independents,\u201d\u202fBiden\u202fsaid,\u202fbut \u201cevery single American should be wearing a mask when they are outside for the next\u202fthree\u202fmonths at a minimum.\u201d\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

Hour later, President Donald Trump accused Biden of politicizing the pandemic with the request, asserting that a mask mandate would cripple the economy, leading to a depression by wanting to \u201clock all Americans in their basements for months on end.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former vice president, in Wilmington, said the governors of every U.S. state \u201cshould mandate mandatory mask wearing,\u201d adding that experts estimate such compliance \u201cwill save 40,000 lives in the next\u202fthree\u202fmonths.\u201d\u202f\u202f \u202f<\/p>\n

The Trump\u202fadministration\u202fhas repeatedly rejected calls for a national mask mandate, leaving\u202fsuch\u202fdecisions to\u202fstate governors.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about your rights,\u201d\u202fBiden\u202fsaid to a group of reporters\u202fin his\u202fhome state of\u202fDelaware.\u202f\u201cIt\u2019s about your responsibility as an American.\u202fThis is America. Be a patriot. Protect your fellow citizens. Step up. Do the right thing.\u201d\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

The president, at an evening news conference, responded that he had emphasized that wearing a mask is a patriotic thing to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe they\u2019re great and maybe they\u2019re just good, maybe they\u2019re not so good,\u201d Trump said of masks. \u201cBut frankly what do you have to lose?\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said, however, there is an issue of freedom when it comes to wearing masks \u2014 which has become a politically divisive issue in the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to have a certain freedom. That\u2019s what we\u2019re about,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s running mate,\u202fSenator\u202fKamala Harris of California, said it is important that Americans\u202flooking at the upcoming election \u201cask the current occupant of the White House,\u202f\u2018When am I going to get vaccinated? When am I\u202factually going\u202fto get vaccinated?\u2019\u201d\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

Most public health officials expect no vaccine ready for mass inoculations in the United States prior to 2021.\u202fTrump, however, has spoken of a vaccine possibly being ready by the time of the presidential election in early November.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

Biden\u202fand Harris\u202fmade their\u202fremarks\u202finside a luxury Wilmington hotel\u202fafter\u202freceiving\u202ftwo virtual briefings\u202f\u2014\u202fone on the COVID-19 public health crisis,\u202fand the other on the economic downturn.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

The presumptive Democratic Party nominees sat at desks\u202fin a hotel ballroom, facing each other without wearing masks but socially distanced.\u202f<\/p>\n

The other participants joined via video links,\u202fand their faces were displayed on a large screen behind Biden and Harris.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

Among those briefing the candidates about the coronavirus pandemic were Dr. Vivek Murthy, a former U.S. surgeon general,\u202fand Dr. Nicki Lurie, a former assistant\u202fsecretary for\u202fpreparedness and\u202fresponse at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

The participants in the economic briefing included\u202fJanet Yellen,\u202fformer chair of the Federal Reserve Board.\u202f<\/p>\n
