Former Food and Drug\u00a0Administration\u00a0official Dr. Scott Gottleib\u00a0appeared\u00a0on CBS\u2019s Face the\u00a0Nation\u00a0Sunday\u00a0to talk\u00a0about\u00a0new\u00a0findings\u00a0by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0that\u00a0say a three-month\u00a0immunity\u00a0is a certainty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u00a0it’s probably the case that you’re going to have a period of immunity that lasts anywhere from six to 12 months. It’s going to be highly variable. Some people will have less immunity, some people will have slightly more. But it’s good news that they’re able to document that people have\u00a0really sterile\u00a0immunity. They’re not going to get reinfected for at least three months and probably longer than that after infection.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Gottlieb\u00a0cautioned\u00a0that the COVID-19\u00a0is called the novel\u00a0(new)\u00a0coronavirus for a reason \u2013 there is still much that doctors don\u2019t\u00a0know\u00a0about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the U.S.\u00a0closing\u00a0in on 170,00 coronavirus deaths, experts at the\u00a0University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics predict that number will\u00a0hit 186,000\u00a0by September 1 and\u00a0more than 390,000 by December 1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Health\u00a0officials\u00a0have not been able to\u00a0convince\u00a0enough\u00a0people to wear masks and practice social distancing\u00a0to slow the spread of the disease.<\/p>\n

U.S. scientists say they have isolated infectious particles of the coronavirus as\u00a0far\u00a0as 4.8 meters away from hospitalized patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The scientists said the widely accepted 2-meter social\u00a0distancing\u00a0advice\u00a0provides a \u201cfalse sense of security\u201d and could result in large groups of people being exposed to the disease. The study, conducted at the university of Florida Health Shands Hospital, has not been peer reviewed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Italian\u00a0cruise ship MSC\u00a0Grandiosa\u00a0will began a voyage to the Mediterranean on Sunday, after it and four\u00a0sister\u00a0cruise ships were idled by the coronavirus pandemic in Civitavecchia, one of the world\u2019s busiest ports.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The five ships can hold a total of 26,000 people. The four other ships will also resume operations soon, positioning Italy as the epicenter of\u00a0the\u00a0effort to resume cruises worldwide.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
