The anti-government protests broke out in November 2019 in response to a hike in petrol prices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"longText\">\n<p>Iran&#8217;s security forces were the perpetrators of\u00a0serious human rights violations against demonstrators in the wake of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/opinion-irans-bloody-protests-are-just-the-beginning\/a-51450365\">anti-government protests in November 2019<\/a>, according to a report by Amnesty International on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The UK-based non-governmental organization\u00a0accused security forces of using torture to elicit confessions, adding that\u00a0hundreds of civilians\u00a0have subsequently been imprisoned\u00a0since last year&#8217;s protests against increased petrol prices that\u00a0prompted\u00a0a severe crackdown from the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the nationwide demonstrations were quelled\u00a0by security forces with widespread\u00a0arrests as well as\u00a0a near-total internet blackout.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Children detained<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Amnesty\u00a0said it had collated dozens of accounts\u00a0and that children as young as 10 were among those arrested.<\/p>\n<p>The testimonies reveal &#8220;a catalog\u00a0of shocking human rights violations, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture and other ill-treatment,&#8221;\u00a0Amnesty\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more:<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iranian-hackers-pose-as-dw-journalists\/a-54781935\">Iranian hackers pose as DW journalists<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those arrested were tortured into &#8220;confessions&#8221; of involvement in the unrest, membership of opposition groups or contact with foreign powers, it added.<\/p>\n<p>The human rights group said it had registered the names of more than 500 people &#8220;subjected to unfair criminal proceedings in connection with the protests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hundreds have since been sentenced to prison terms and flogging and several to the death penalty following grossly unfair trials which were presided over by biased judges behind closed doors,&#8221; Amnesty said.<\/p>\n<p>Jail terms ranged from one month to 10 years, the report stated.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Water boarding and sexual violence deployed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Techniques deployed to torture those detained included water boarding, beating, electric shocks, pepper spraying genitals, sexual violence, mock executions and pulling out finger and toe nails, Amnesty said.<\/p>\n<p>In May this year, Iran&#8217;s interior minister suggested that up to 225 people died during the protests, when petrol pumps were set on fire, police stations attacked and stores\u00a0looted.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more:<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-retrieves-cockpit-recordings-from-downed-ukraine-airlines-jet\/a-54664189\">Iran retrieves cockpit recordings from downed Ukraine Airlines jet<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A group of independent UN rights experts said in December 2019 that hundreds of\u00a0people could have been killed, based on unconfirmed reports while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/amnesty-says-more-than-300-killed-in-iran-protest-crackdown\/a-51686881\">Amnesty also suggested more than 300 citizens perished<\/a> in the wake of the unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Iran blamed the violence that broke out in the midst of\u00a0the protests on &#8220;thugs&#8221; supported by the US, Israel and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"col3 right\">\n<div class=\"standaloneWrap\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DW \u2014 Dozens of demonstrators were arbitrarily arrested and abused, according to an Amnesty International report.
