Adam Schiff, D-Calif., Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill, after a meeting at the White House in Washington.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The House Intelligence Committee report, based on hundreds of hours of interviews with intelligence officials and reviews of thousands of assessments, criticized U.S. intelligence agencies for becoming overly focused on their counterterrorism mission and for failing to adapt to the threats of a changing world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the United States was busy engaging al-Qaida, ISIS [Islamic State] and their affiliates, offshoots and acolytes, Washington&#8217;s unchallenged dominance over the global system slipped away,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>To better counter China and other emerging threats, the report said, U.S. intelligence agencies need to make better use of information commonly available on the internet, social media and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The report also said U.S. intelligence officials need to pay more attention to nonimmediate, nonmilitary threats \u201csuch as global health, economic security and climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the report called for a greater focus on recruiting and mentoring what it described as \u201cthe next generation of China analysts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good news is that we still have time to adapt,\u201d said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s my hope that the intelligence community will work hand in hand with the congressional oversight committees to make these necessary changes quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"b81b4b38-5cc3-476b-9411-8a391229bdc7\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2020-09\/AP_20260648443141.jpg?itok=oDjlgrNm\" alt=\"Ranking Member Michael McCaul, R-Tex., questions witnesses during a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing looking into the\u2026\" width=\"737\" height=\"503\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption>Ranking Member Michael McCaul, R-Tex., questions witnesses during a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing, Sept. 16, 2020 on Capitol Hill in Washington.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/478104010\/China-Task-Force-Report\">second report<\/a> released Wednesday, by Republican lawmakers, was no less damning, recommending more than 400 changes to Washington\u2019s China strategy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To preserve democracy and freedom around the world, the U.S. must act decisively with our allies to regain the initiative,&#8221; the China Task Force report warned.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Communist Party ideology \u201cis undermining the core principles of the international system and putting Americans\u2019 safety and prosperity at risk,\u201d it said. \u201cLeniency and accommodation of the CCP and its oppressive agenda is no longer an option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report calls on policymakers to boost counterintelligence operations against China and to make sure that the U.S. medical and national security supply chains no longer need to reply on Chinese-made goods.<\/p>\n<p>It also recommends increased spending on defense to better counter Chinese nuclear capabilities as well as China\u2019s growing conventional forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than 40 years, we have tried to bring them into the family of nations as a responsible partner, but they have refused to behave responsibly,\u201d China Task Force Chairman Michael McCaul said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA \u2014 WASHINGTON &#8211; U.S. lawmakers are sounding alarms about the threat from China, warning Washington has so far failed to keep up with Beijing as it emerges as a global power.
