The source had no further details on the conditions of Meysami\u2019s detention.<\/p>\n<p>The 50-year-old <a href=\"hyperlink: https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2018\/10\/iran-critically-ill-prisoner-of-conscience-coerced-to-end-hunger-strike\/\">medical doctor and women\u2019s rights activist<\/a> has been imprisoned by Iran since his July 31, 2018, arrest. Security agents detained him at his Tehran home where they found him in possession of pins with the slogan \u201cI am against compulsory hijab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meysami had been peacefully supporting a 2018 campaign by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/campaigns\/2019\/05\/iran-abusive-forced-veiling-laws-police-womens-lives\/\">Iranian women<\/a> who removed their hijabs in public to protest Islamist regulations requiring the headscarves. He was sentenced in January 2019 to five years in prison on charges of \u201cspreading propaganda against the system\u201d and \u201cgathering and colluding to commit crimes against national security,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/ipa.united4iran.org\/en\/prisoner\/4599\/\">sentence<\/a> that was upheld on appeal in August that year.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities initially incarcerated Meysami at Tehran\u2019s Evin prison before moving him to Rajaei Shahr last November.<\/p>\n<p>A former Iranian political prisoner first reported Meysami\u2019s coronavirus infection in a series of Monday tweets.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1313068668826390528&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.voanews.com%2Fmiddle-east%2Fvoa-news-iran%2Fsource-iranian-dissident-contracts-coronavirus-prison&amp;siteScreenName=VOANews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1313068668826390528\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ipa.united4iran.org\/en\/prisoner\/947\/\">Zia Nabavi<\/a>,\u00a0who is based in Iran, tweeted that Meysami informed him of the diagnosis in a phone call from prison that day. Otherwise, they must be released temporarily or conditionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meysami\u2019s infection got a mention in Iranian state media as well. High Commissioner for Human Rights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=26345&amp;LangID=E\">Michelle Bachelet<\/a> also issued a statement Tuesday\u00a0saying poor conditions inside Iranian prisons have \u201cled to the spread of the virus among detainees, reportedly resulting in a number of deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call for [Iran\u2019s] unconditional release of human rights defenders, lawyers,\u202fpolitical prisoners, peaceful protesters and all other\u202findividuals deprived of their liberty for expressing their views or otherwise exercising their rights,\u201d Bachelet said. \u201cIt is particularly important to rectify such injustices at a time when COVID-19 is coursing through Iran\u2019s prisons.\u201d\u202f<\/p>\n<p><em>This article originated in <a href=\"hyperlink:\u202fhttps:\/\/ir.voanews.com\/\">VOA\u2019s Persian Service<\/a>.
