{"id":89642,"date":"2020-10-12T07:20:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T12:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/?p=89642"},"modified":"2020-10-12T07:20:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T12:20:40","slug":"auto-draft-257","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/en\/2020\/10\/12\/auto-draft-257\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger Can Be Good for Political Campaigns but Bad for Democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89643 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Rage-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Rage-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Rage-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Rage.jpg 600w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Rage-24x16.jpg 24w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Rage-36x24.jpg 36w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Rage-48x32.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>VOA \u2014 Rage is a powerful motivator in American politics, capable of boosting voter motivation and filling campaign coffers, according to political science and public policy professors who have studied the matter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They say that\u00a0stoking voter anger helped elevate Donald Trump to the White House in 2016, and helped Democrats retake control of the House of Representatives in 2018.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoliticians themselves are deliberately seeking to make Americans angry and they do this because when people are angry, they tend to vote loyally for their own party&#8217;s slate of candidates up and down the ballot,\u201d says Steven Webster, assistant professor of political science at Indiana University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, put simply, an angry voter is a loyal voter and because politicians are concerned with getting reelected, they make us angry to further that goal,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The strategic use of anger is not new, according to Webster,\u00a0who says it\u2019s been\u00a0marshalled\u00a0in politics since the country\u2019s founding. Webster explored the phenomenon in his book, \u201cAmerican Rage: How Anger Shapes Our Politics.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump is certainly a very blatant, for lack of a better word, example of politicians\u2019 use of anger,\u201d he says. \u201cDemocratic politicians use anger just as much as Republicans do.\u00a0\u2026\u00a0In fact, Democrats are quite angry right now. It&#8217;s kind of ironic, Joe Biden has this whole thing of saying he wants to restore the soul of America, but Joe Biden and his allies are still eliciting anger at Donald Trump, because anger is an action-oriented motivation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2020\/08\/13\/election-2020-voters-are-highly-engaged-but-nearly-half-expect-to-have-difficulties-voting\/\">recent poll <\/a>finds that 61% of Biden supporters say they would be angry if Trump wins, while 37% of Trump supporters say they\u00a0would\u00a0be angry if Biden wins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you can get people to feel angry, that&#8217;s a very useful political tool if the balance is thrown to the side of going with this guttural feeling rather than your rational thoughts,\u201d says\u00a0Bonnie Stabile, professor of public policy at George Mason University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While stirring up and harnessing anger might be good for political campaigns,\u00a0the academics say\u00a0it can ultimately erode Americans\u2019 trust in the federal government and, more broadly, faith in the democratic system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2020\/09\/14\/americans-views-of-government-low-trust-but-some-positive-performance-ratings\/\">Pew Research poll <\/a>finds that only 1 in 5 U.S. adults, just 20%, trust the federal government to \u201cdo the right thing\u201d just about always or most of the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrusting government tends to facilitate a culture in which we can have bipartisan cooperation,\u201d Webster says. \u201cTrusting government perpetuates support for the social welfare programs that seek to make society better off, things like Medicare and Medicaid and\u00a0Social\u00a0Security. And so, without this trust in government, it&#8217;s really hard to sustain things that we\u2019ve really come to take for granted as Americans.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"824c64ff-69b2-4807-b1fb-136ce091269f\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2020-09\/AP_18073069020394.jpg?itok=MEyxaYnD\" alt=\"A supporter, right, and an anti-Trump supporter, href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2019\/04\/11\/public-trust-in-government-1958-2019\/\">Public trust<\/a> in the national government has\u00a0been in decline\u00a0for decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/vop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Dissatisfaction_Report.pdf\">2016 poll <\/a>found that 83% of respondents were dissatisfied with how the federal government works, and 32% said they were not just dissatisfied, but also angry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans think the federal government&#8217;s doing too much and the Democrats think the federal government&#8217;s not doing enough,\u201d Webster says. \u201cAnd\u00a0so\u00a0you have Democrats and Republicans being angry with the government, but for very different reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0says\u00a0this anger and distrust can lead to the erosion of basic democratic values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Americans are angry, they&#8217;re more likely to say that those who disagree with them politically are less intelligent than they are, they&#8217;re more likely to say that those who support the other party are a threat to the country&#8217;s\u00a0well-being,\u201d Webster says. \u201cThis political anger moves political disagreements into personal disagreements and personal evaluations and when the political becomes personal like this, you have a whole bunch of problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" this divide between people as Americans increasingly spend less time together in public spaces, Stabile\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can avoid each other,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cThe anger is really stoked when\u00a0\u2026\u00a0there&#8217;s no balance between this shared consensus of what does it mean to be a citizen and what&#8217;s our common space that we exist in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Webster doesn\u2019t see a way for Americans to break free of this anger trap\u00a0as long as\u00a0politicians continue to actively rile up their supporters\u00a0\u2013 and
