\"\"VOA \u2014 WASHINGTON – With pressure mounting in Washington for his early removal from office over his followers\u2019 rampage through the U.S. Capitol, U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday indicated he is giving up his fruitless drive to cling to his office and committed himself to an orderly transfer of power to Democrat Joe Biden, who will be sworn in as the 46th president on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n

Earlier Thursday, the top two Democrats in Congress called for Trump\u2019s removal from office, either through a second impeachment or by way of a provision in the U.S. Constitution that permits the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to remove a president who is mentally unfit. Some Republicans have also urged his removal.<\/p>\n

But the latter path appeared unlikely following reports late Thursday that Vice President Mike Pence, who broke with Trump this week over the president\u2019s demands that he seek to overturn the election result, is unwilling to invoke the 25th Amendment.<\/p>\n

New calls to invoke the 25th Amendment were sparked by Wednesday\u2019s mob attack on the Capitol building by supporters of President Donald Trump<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

That would have been the \u201cquickest and most effective way\u201d to oust Trump from the White House, said Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, who is soon to become the Senate majority leader. \u201cThis president should not hold office one day longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, he said, \u201cIf the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.\u201d<\/p>\n
