{"id":91839,"date":"2021-01-10T16:04:35","date_gmt":"2021-01-10T21:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/?p=91839"},"modified":"2021-01-10T16:04:35","modified_gmt":"2021-01-10T21:04:35","slug":"auto-draft-423","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/en\/2021\/01\/10\/auto-draft-423\/","title":{"rendered":"US House Democrats Push for Trump&#8217;s Impeachment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91840 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Democrats-Impeach-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Democrats-Impeach-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Democrats-Impeach-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Democrats-Impeach.jpg 600w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Democrats-Impeach-24x16.jpg 24w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Democrats-Impeach-36x24.jpg 36w, https:\/\/PERSIAN-HERITAGE.COM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Democrats-Impeach-48x32.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>VOA \u2014 WASHINGTON &#8211; Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives pushed ahead Sunday to impeach Donald Trump in the waning days of his presidency, contending he should be held accountable for last Wednesday\u2019s mayhem that left five people dead at the U.S. Capitol as a mob of Trump supporters stormed past police into the building.<\/p>\n<p>No final decision has been made, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could introduce an impeachment resolution on Monday accusing Trump of inciting an insurrection in a futile effort to block Congress from certifying the Electoral College vote in favor of President-elect Joe Biden. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden has taken a hands-off stance on the impeachment move against the outgoing president who has yet to concede the election, even though Trump has acknowledged there will be a \u201cnew administration\u201d in Washington come January 20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 10 days, we move forward and rebuild \u2014 together,\u201d Biden said Sunday on Twitter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1348299813163474944&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.voanews.com%2F2020-usa-votes%2Fus-house-democrats-push-trumps-impeachment&amp;siteScreenName=VOANews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1348299813163474944\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>One of Pelosi\u2019s top congressional lieutenants, Congressman Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, told the \u201cFox News Sunday\u201d show that the House could vote on impeachment within days even though Trump\u2019s four-year presidency ends next week with the inauguration of Biden, a long-time Washington political fixture who defeated Trump in the November election, and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Given that Trump will be out of office within days, there is little likelihood that the Senate would hold an impeachment trial before his term ends, although it could still do so after he leaves, and if it convicts him, keep him from ever holding office again.<\/p>\n<p>But Clyburn said the urgency to impeach Trump for a second time is paramount, separate from the Senate acquittal of him last February on allegations he pressured Ukraine to dig up dirt on Biden in advance of the November election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur business is to impeach, basically an indictment,\u201d Clyburn said. \u201cOur vote is our voice, and our vote is a voice of disapproval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clyburn said he recognizes that starting the impeachment process against Trump could draw attention away from the confirmation of Biden\u2019s Cabinet choices in the Senate, the incoming president\u2019s effort to boost the flagging U.S. economy and to ramp up vaccinations of Americans against the coronavirus that now has killed more than 372,000 people in the U.S. and infected 22.1 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n<p>But Clyburn argued, \u201cIt does not mean the House shouldn\u2019t do its business. Let\u2019s do the people\u2019s work and then the Senate will decide\u201d on how to proceed with a prospective impeachment trial.\u00a0\u00a0 In a separate interview with CNN, he suggested the House could vote to impeach Trump and then delay sending the case to the Senate for trial until after the new president\u2019s first 100 days in office.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"22ce6892-8bf2-4f11-ac2f-5311254ef1d0\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/ap-images\/2021\/01\/04061bb08980f0852127ad285ff0444b.jpg?itok=3G3OiM-7\" alt=\"District of Columbia National Guard stand outside the Capitol, Wednesday night, Jan. 6, 2021, after a day of rioting protesters\u2026\" width=\"737\" height=\"491\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption>District of Columbia National Guardsmen stand outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, after a day of rioting Trump supporters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, a long-time Trump critic, said she would introduce two articles of impeachment against Trump on Monday, \u201cabuse of power\u201d for pressuring election officials in the southern state of Georgia to overturn Biden\u2019s narrow win in the state and \u201cincitement of violence for orchestrating an attempted coup against our country\u201d with the storming of the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>At least 180 House Democrats have signed on to the impeachment effort, but that is short of the 218 majority in the 435-member House and no Republicans have voiced their support for it.<\/p>\n<p>About two-thirds of the House Republican caucus voted last week against accepting the election results in the eastern state of Pennsylvania, one of a half dozen states Biden narrowly won to capture the presidency. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republican Senator Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican and head of the committee planning Biden\u2019s inauguration, told CBS News\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation\u201d show, that Trump\u2019s impeachment and removal from office \u201cclearly is not going to happen between now and the last day he is in office.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, have called for Trump to resign, but the president has told advisers he does not plan to do so. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think at this point, with just a few days left, it\u2019s the best path forward, the best way to get this person in the rear-view mirror for us,\u201d Toomey said Sunday on CNN, in calling for Trump to quit voluntarily. \u201cThat could happen immediately. I\u2019m not optimistic it will.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"4a1c9f64-647b-4adc-b207-880c1583f2b2\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2021-01\/2021-01-10T165400Z_1839837499_RC245L90MHP4_RTRMADP_3_USA-ELECTION.JPG?itok=Ez03J6jc\" alt=\"National Guard troops cross the grounds of the U.S. Capitol building on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., January 10, 2021\u2026\" width=\"737\" height=\"491\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption>National Guard troops cross the grounds of the U.S. Capitol building on Capitol Hill in Washington, Jan. 10, 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any doubt, none in my mind, that the president\u2019s behavior after the election was wildly different than his behavior before,\u201d Toomey said. \u201cHe descended into a level of madness and engaged in activity that was just absolutely unthinkable and unforgivable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, who quit as Trump\u2019s special envoy to Northern Ireland last week to protest Trump\u2019s urging supporters to march to the Capitol, told Fox News that \u201csomething is very different\u201d in Trump\u2019s actions in the post-election period as he faces defeat.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Trump can claim successes during his presidency, but said, \u201cAll of that changed on Wednesday and I don\u2019t know why.\u201d Mulvaney once was a House member before joining the Trump administration but said that if he were now facing a vote to impeach Trump, he would have to consider it \u201creally, really seriously.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Trump supporters who barged past police into the Capitol, ransacked congressional offices and skirmished with authorities have already been identified, often through their social media posts, and arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Police are trying to determine how one policeman was killed, possibly hit with a fire extinguisher in a melee with Trump supporters.
