Germany’s vaccine commission STIKO<\/a> said on Thursday that AstraZeneca’s COVID-19\u00a0jab should only be administered to\u00a0people\u00a0aged 64 and under.<\/p>\n

The panel of medical experts cited a lack of data\u00a0regarding the vaccine’s\u00a0effectiveness for\u00a0older people.<\/p>\n

“There is currently insufficient data to assess the efficacy of the vaccine for persons aged 65 years and older,” the scientific committee\u00a0said in the resolution made available by the German Health Ministry.<\/p>\n

“The AstraZeneca vaccine, unlike the mRNA vaccines, should only be offered to people aged 18-64 years at each stage,” it added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

UK defends efficacy<\/h2>\n

Meanwhile, AstraZeneca and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson hit back in response to\u00a0STIKO’s findings.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the UK-based company said the latest clinical trial data for its vaccine\u00a0“support efficacy in the over 65 years age group.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Johnson also gave his backing\u00a0to the vaccine\u00a0jointly developed with the University of Oxford. He said he did not agree with the German assessment of the vaccine.<\/p>\n

“Our own authorities have made it very clear that they think the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine is very good and efficacious,” Johnson said.<\/p>\n

Shortfall of doses<\/h2>\n

On Wednesday, the European Union aired its frustrations<\/a>\u00a0with AstraZeneca, suggesting\u00a0the pharmaceutical giant was reneging on its\u00a0agreement to supply the bloc with vaccine doses.<\/p>\n

The dismay\u00a0with the Anglo-Swedish firm\u00a0comes as Germany admitted\u00a0it faces\u00a0a shortfall of vaccines<\/a> that could continue until April, Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

As a result, Spahn said\u00a0there would be a meeting on Monday\u00a0between Chancellor Angela Merkel, the nation’s 16 state premiers, and senior figures within the pharmaceutical\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n

Spahn had called for such a summit\u00a0because the government is “working on the assumption of at least 10 more hard weeks<\/a> due to the vaccine shortage,” he wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Germany’s vaccination process was dealt a blow last week when AstraZeneca slashed its expected initial deliveries of doses to\u00a0EU countries\u00a0by around 60%.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
