It was sent to the United Nations, where treaties and agreements are \u201cdeposited\u201d with the secretary-general, and now, after a 30-day wait, the U.S. officially becomes a party to the agreement once again.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-left drupal-entity\" role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"984455ec-85f7-417a-b8e3-ff3274c6b704\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2021-01\/2020-12-17T153957Z_566327722_RC23PK9DB71Z_RTRMADP_3_GERMANY-UN.JPG?itok=i2OT4BgP\" alt=\"FILE - U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it is a \u201cday of hope,\u201d and good news both for the United States and the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the past four years, the absence of a key player created a gap in the Paris Agreement; a missing link that weakened the whole,\u201d he said of the Trump years when the U.S. did not engage on climate action. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the race of our lifetimes,\u201d Guterres added. \u201cWe must go much faster, and much farther.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden has committed to ambitious targets, including the U.S. achieving a 100% clean energy economy and reaching net-zero emissions no later than 2050.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He appointed former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry \u2013 who helped negotiate the Paris deal in 2015 \u2013 as the first-ever\u202fpresidential envoy on climate and made him a part of his National Security Council.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1362753331547041793&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.voanews.com%2Fusa%2Fus-rejoins-paris-climate-accord&amp;siteScreenName=VOANews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1362753331547041793\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Kerry joined the U.N.\u202fchief\u202fon Friday, declaring that \u201cfailure is not an option\u201d and noting that emissions have continued to rise globally in the years since Paris. He said this means the transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy has to happen faster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything has to be done with a greater sense of urgency, with the determination that we have to win this fight,\u201d Kerry said. \u201cCan we do that? Can we win it? Absolutely my friends, we can!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said that would require the largest emitters, including China, the United States, India, Japan and the European Union, to be realistic about what they need to do in the next 10 years to meet net-zero targets and keep the Earth from warming more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
