The move was described by world powers as &#8220;dangerous,&#8221; and came as the UN&#8217;s nuclear agency said it was concerned by Iran&#8217;s uranium stockpile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"longText\">\n<p>Iran said on Tuesday it would stop handing over footage of nuclear sites to\u00a0the UN&#8217;s nuclear watchdog in response to a US refusal so far to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iaea-chief-arrives-in-iran-ahead-of-sanctions-deadline\/a-56638624\">lift sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s move underlines the task facing US President Joe Biden as he tries to reverse Trump&#8217;s decision to withdraw from a historic 2015 deal.<\/p>\n<h2>What has Iran said?<\/h2>\n<p>Iran says it will stop sharing surveillance footage of nuclear facilities with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tehran would stop the daily and weekly handover of recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran&#8217;s civilian nuclear agency the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has promised to preserve the tapes for three months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The AEOI said it would then hand the recordings over to the AEOI &#8211; but only if Iran is granted sanctions relief.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, the recordings will be deleted \u2013 narrowing the possibility of any diplomatic breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zari said his country would also no longer implement rules that allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/nuclear-program-iran-cuts-un-watchdogs-access\/a-56645358\">short-notice inspections of facilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Europe responds with regret, hope<\/h2>\n<p>Britain, France, and Germany \u2013 the three European countries that were party to a 2015 nuclear deal \u2013 said they &#8220;deeply regret&#8221; Tehran&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>The pact, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was the most significant agreement between Tehran and major world powers since Iran&#8217;s 1979 Islamic revolution.<\/p>\n<p>London, Paris, and Berlin said they were &#8220;united in underlining the dangerous nature of this decision&#8221; to curb inspections.<\/p>\n<p>However, all three European nations stressed their commitment to preserving the agreement, urging Iran to &#8220;stop and reverse all measures that reduce transparency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Biden has said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-says-it-is-ready-to-meet-with-iran-over-nuclear-deal\/a-56621482\">US is willing to re-engage with partners<\/a> in the so-called P5+1 group &#8211; China, France, Russia, Britain, the US plus Germany. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged\u00a0on Monday that the US would work to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-wants-to-strengthen-iran-nuclear-deal\/a-56655385\">&#8220;lengthen and strengthen&#8221; the agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Tehran has said it is ready to return to its commitments if the US first lifts sanctions imposed by Trump.<\/p>\n<h2>Warning from nuclear watchdog<\/h2>\n<p>Iran is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-to-ramp-up-uranium-enrichment-program\/a-56113810\">ramping up its program to\u00a0enrich\u00a0uranium<\/a> to a level of 20% purity at Fordow, a site\u00a0built in secret inside a mountain where the deal says Iran cannot enrich at all.<\/p>\n<p>The IAEA on Tuesday reported that Iran&#8217;s stockpile of enriched uranium was now almost 15 times the limit set down in the 2015 deal.<\/p>\n<p>The stockpile now stands at 2,967.8 kilos, the IAEA said, vastly exceeding the limit of 202.8 kilos of enriched uranium.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said its inspectors had also confirmed Iran had started enriching uranium up to a purity of 20%, only a technical step away from weapons-grade levels.<\/p>\n<p>The IAEA also said it was &#8220;deeply concerned&#8221; by the possible presence of nuclear material at an undeclared site in Iran.
