International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)\u00a0Director General\u00a0Rafael Grossi<\/a> told reporters in Vienna on Thursday that Iran has agreed to meet with international experts investigating the discovery of uranium particles at several undeclared sites.<\/p>\n

Grossi also said Iran had accepted holding a series of meetings with the UN nuclear watchdog in order to “clarify\u2002a\u2002number\u2002of\u2002outstanding\u2002issues”<\/p>\n

Iran has\u00a0previously stonewalled investigators demanding an explanation for the uranium particles<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The announcement came as Germany, France and the UK decided to pause the submission of a resolution\u00a0criticizing Iran’s suspension of some IAEA inspections. The resolution was intended to be brought before the IAEA’s board of governors this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Today’s\u2002developments\u2002can\u2002keep\u2002open\u2002the\u2002path\u2002of\u2002diplomacy\u2002initiated\u2002by\u2002Iran\u2002and\u2002the\u2002IAEA,”\u2002Foreign\u2002Ministry\u2002spokesman\u2002Saeed\u2002Khatibzadeh\u2002said.<\/p>\n

The 2015 nuclear deal<\/a> promised Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for transparency in scaling down nuclear weapons development.<\/p>\n

Iran began to step up uranium enrichment after the US withdrew from the accord\u00a0and increased sanctions under former President Donald Trump. New US leadership under President Joe Biden has sparked hopes that all sides can return to the negotiating table to salvage the deal.<\/p>\n

One diplomatic source told the AFP news agency that the European governments’ decision to pause criticism of Tehran would “give time to diplomacy,” citing signs of “good faith” on the Iranian side following Grossi’s initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What are Europeans saying?<\/h2>\n

Germany’s Foreign Ministry<\/a> told The Associated Press that\u00a0it was common to “discuss all possible options for action” ahead of such meetings, adding that the European powers, called the E3, still have concerns about Tehran’s “serious violations” of the deal.<\/p>\n

“Above\u2002all,\u2002we\u2002would\u2002like\u2002to\u2002support\u2002the\u2002director\u2002general\u2002of\u2002the IAEA\u2002in\u2002his\u2002efforts\u2002to\u2002start\u2002talks\u2002with\u2002Iran\u2002regarding\u2002the\u2002open safeguards\u2002issues,”\u2002the\u2002ministry\u2002said.<\/p>\n
