Security Council on the links between war and hunger. \u201cConflict drives hunger and famine. And hunger and famine drive conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said 34 million people in over three dozen countries were just a step away from famine. Last year, the agency reached 114 million people with food assistance \u2014 the highest in its history. This year, it needs $5.5 billion just to avert famine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased hunger \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For years now, Yemen has been the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crisis. Currently, more than 16 million people are in need of assistance; 5 million are on the verge of famine; and 50,000 are already starving. All the suffering is manmade \u2014 with armed conflict, blockades and restrictions on humanitarian access among the factors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese aren\u2019t just numbers, they are real people,\u201d WFP Executive Director David Beasley said Thursday. \u201cWe are heading straight toward the biggest famine in modern history. It is hell on earth in many places in Yemen right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"44e503e7-a56b-4639-aa7a-622d24613d0e\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2021-02\/reu_ituri2.JPG?itok=YaSbkiCn\" alt=\"FILE - Congolese children are seen at a makeshift camp for internally displaced people in Bunia, Ituri province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, June 25, 2019.\" width=\"737\" height=\"500\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption>FILE &#8211; Congolese children are seen at a makeshift camp for internally displaced people in Bunia, Ituri province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, June 25, 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But as bad as Yemen is, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is poised to overtake it in terms of sheer need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, it [the DRC]\u00a0is set to become the world\u2019s largest hunger emergency, with 19.6 million people facing crisis, emergency or catastrophic levels of food insecurity \u2014 up from 15.6 million people a year ago,\u201d Beasley told council members.<\/p>\n<p>In Afghanistan, nearly 17 million people are food insecure, he said, and in Nigeria, 13 million. Syria, which is entering its second decade of civil war on Monday, has more than 12 million people facing crisis levels of hunger.<\/p>\n<p>Beasley spoke about South Sudan, which he visited last month. More than 7 million people there face acute levels of hunger or worse. Can you imagine?\u201d Beasley asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese looming famines have two things in common: They are primarily driven by conflict, and they are entirely preventable,\u201d he said of the many crises.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the consequences have a far-reaching impact, causing economic deterioration, destabilization, mass migration and starvation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New crisis on the horizon\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The United Nations has expressed deep concern about the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia\u2019s Tigray Region. Four months of fighting between federal forces and the region\u2019s former ruling party, the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF), has exacerbated an already grave situation, as food supplies are running out and malnutrition is rising.<\/p>\n<p>More than a million people were already dependent on food aid before the fighting began in November. Now, WFP says the number could be higher than 3 million.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"af9a077c-126c-41c2-8e41-eddfa64ad3ce\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2020-12\/afp_tigray_kids.jpg?itok=gcBQazBe\" alt=\"Children play in front of a bullet-ridden wall of a destroyed store in the village of Bisober, in Ethiopia's Tigray region, Dec. 9, 2020. \" width=\"737\" height=\"491\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption>FILE &#8211; Children play in front of a bullet-damaged wall of a destroyed store in the village of Bisober, in Ethiopia&#8217;s Tigray Region, Dec. 9, 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply concerned about the situation in Tigray, Ethiopia, where the harvest season has been disrupted by insecurity and violence, and hundreds of thousands of people could be experiencing hunger,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, which chairs the Security Council this month and organized Thursday\u2019s special session, called on \u201call sides\u201d in Ethiopia to stop fighting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActors in Ethiopia, including Eritrean forces from across Ethiopia\u2019s borders, have restricted humanitarian access to the rural areas where the most Tigrayans live,\u201d U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said. \u201cWe cannot allow this situation to deteriorate further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a written statement to council members, Ethiopia\u2019s U.N. envoy, Taye Atske Selassie,\u00a0blamed the TPLF for the food shortages, saying it had destroyed infrastructure and displaced civilians. He said the government was willing to engage constructively with the international community.<\/p>\n<p>Also during the session, Guterres announced that he was\u00a0creating a \u201cHigh-Level Task Force on Preventing Famine,\u201d to be led by his humanitarian chief, Mark Lowcock. It will include representatives from the WFP and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
