Stephanopoulos asked the president if he thought Putin was a killer, to which Biden responded, \u201cUh-huh. I do\u201d<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwyg_video\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"eb4e409d-a682-489b-99e6-3f33c8e2bec3\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>Speaking remotely with reporters from Moscow, Putin asserted that the adage \u201cit takes one to know one\u201d is more than just a childish retort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has deep psychological meaning,\u201d the Russian leader said.<\/p>\n<p>Putin said that when people judge other people, they are projecting their own traits onto them. \u201cWe always see ourselves,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are always projecting what is of importance for us, what is our essence, on other people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Russian president also said that if he saw Biden, he would wish him good health, \u201cwithout irony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both leaders in their respective interviews said they could continue working together within areas of mutual interest. But other actions taken by Russia in the wake of Biden\u2019s interview indicate that might become difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before Putin spoke Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters via telephone that Biden\u2019s comments were \u201cvery bad,\u201d and that clearly the U.S. president \u201cdoes not want to mend relations with our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peskov also said this was the point from which they would proceed in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ambassador recalled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moscow on Thursday recalled its ambassador to the U.S. in Washington, Anatoly Antonov, to Russia for \u201cconsultations\u201d to \u201canalyze Russia-U.S. bilateral relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday that Biden was \u201cnot going to hold back\u201d when he had\u00a0concerns about Putin\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>She said Biden did not regret referring to Putin as a killer and rebuffed suggestions that his rhetoric was unhelpful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden has known President Putin for a long time,\u201d Psaki said. \u201cThey\u2019ve both been on the global stage for a long time, worked through many iterations of a relationship between the United States and Russia. And he believes we can continue to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Psaki also dismissed Putin\u2019s \u201cit takes one to know one\u201d response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president believes that one of the greatest attributes of the United States is our honest self-reflection, and our constant striving for progress, and there\u2019s always more work to do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Putin cited the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan during World War II, as well as its history of slavery and the slaughtering of Native Americans, as evidence of its ill intent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA \u2014 Russian President Vladimir Putin responded Thursday to comments made by U.S. President Joe Biden in which he described the Russian leader as a killer, saying, \u201cIt takes one to know one.\u201d Biden made the comment during an interview with ABC News host George Stephanopoulos, released Wednesday.
