The expiration of the arrangement means the UN watchdog\u00a0will\u00a0no longer have access to Iran’s\u00a0nuclear data held at atomic sites across the country.<\/p>\n

“From May 22 and with the end of the three-month agreement, the agency will have no access to data collected by cameras inside the nuclear facilities agreed under the agreement,” Mohammad Baqher Qalibaf said on state TV.<\/p>\n

Qalibaf’s comments further underscored the narrowing window for the United States<\/a>\u00a0and others to resuscitate\u00a0a nuclear accord\u00a0with Tehran<\/a>. The Islamic Republic is already enriching and stockpiling uranium at levels far beyond those permitted in the 2015 deal\u00a0(JCPOA).<\/p>\n

Iran seeks sanctions relief<\/h2>\n

In December, Iran’s parliament<\/a>\u00a0passed a bill that would suspend part of UN\u00a0inspections of its nuclear facilities if European signatories did not provide sanctions relief on its\u00a0oil and banking sectors by February.<\/p>\n

The IAEA subsequently sealed a three-month arrangement with Iran so it could access information and\u00a0images, with Tehran threatening to delete them afterward if no deal had been reached.<\/p>\n

As part of the arrangement,\u00a0the IAEA could gather and analyze\u00a0“hundreds of thousands of images captured daily by its sophisticated surveillance cameras.”<\/p>\n

Qalibaf said Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say on all matters of state, backed\u00a0the decision to block UN access.<\/p>\n

The IAEA\u00a0said earlier this week it was in talks with Tehran on how to proceed with the monitoring deal but those discussions have yet to yield a solid outcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
