His comments came a day after U.S. Secretary of State Antony\u00a0Blinken\u00a0said it is\u00a0not clear whether Iran will\u00a0comply with\u00a0restrictions on its nuclear development program\u00a0in order to\u00a0have U.S. economic sanctions removed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran, I think, knows what it needs to do to come back into compliance on the nuclear side, and what we haven\u2019t yet seen is whether Iran is ready and willing to make a decision to do what it has to do,\u201d\u00a0Blinken told ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week\u201d show. \u201cThat\u2019s the test and we don\u2019t yet have an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran has been in indirect talks with the United States through diplomats from other countries in reshaping the 2015 international nuclear deal to restrain Tehran\u2019s nuclear ambitions. Iran has said its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.<\/p>\n

Then\u00a0Trump withdrew the United States\u00a0from the pact in 2018, imposing new sanctions on\u00a0Iran\u2019s\u00a0oil, banking and shipping sectors. But U.S. President Joe Biden is looking to rejoin the pact that includes Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China.<\/p>\n

In a separate interview, Blinken told CNN that the United States\u00a0and Iran have \u201cactually made progress\u201d in the talks in Vienna and a fifth round is scheduled in the coming days.<\/p>\n

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said last week that the United States was ready to lift trade sanctions, although a senior Iranian official later contradicted him. European diplomats said difficult issues remained in the negotiations.<\/p>\n

Iran has maintained that for it to return to the deal, the United States\u00a0must first lift its sanctions, while the U.S. says Iran must first return to compliance with the deal\u2019s terms.<\/p>\n

Iran has consistently breached the 2015 pact\u2019s restrictions on uranium enrichment, but\u00a0Blinken\u00a0told CNN if both sides can return to the original deal, \u201cthen we can use that as a foundation both to look at how to make the deal itself potentially longer and stronger \u2014 and also engage on these other issues, whether it\u2019s Iran\u2019s support for terrorism … its destabilizing support for different proxies throughout the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he told\u00a0ABC,\u00a0\u201cThe first thing that we need to do is put the nuclear problem back in the box.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Tehran, Iran\u2019s\u00a0hardline\u00a0parliament speaker said a temporary deal between Iran and international inspectors to preserve surveillance images taken at nuclear sites had ended.<\/p>\n
