Colombia is home to the world&#8217;s largest variety of butterflies, approximately 20% of all known species, according to a study published Tuesday by the Natural History Museum in London.<\/p>\n<p>An international team of scientists cataloged 3,642 species and 2,085 subspecies, registering them in a document titled &#8220;Checklist of Colombian Butterflies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 butterfly species are found only in Colombia, said Blanca Huertas, the senior butterfly collection curator at the museum and a member of the research team.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-left drupal-entity\" role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"c657ba6c-2839-47fd-96ff-b8b0033a0af8\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2021-06\/000_Was4247717.jpg?itok=yCnX8lym\" alt=\"An Alissa de Pteronymia &quot;Crystal wings&quot; butterfly lands on a flower at the Botanic Garden Jose Celestino Mutis during an exhibition in Bogota on Sept. 14, 2011.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Project researchers traveled widely in Colombia, analyzed more than 350,000 photographs and studied information collected since the late 18th century, the museum said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Colombia is a country with a great diversity of natural habitats, a complex and heterogeneous geography and a privileged location in the extreme northeast of South America,&#8221; the report reads in part.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These factors, added to the delicate public order in the last century in certain regions, has limited until now, the advancement of field exploration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Colombia has endured more than a half century of armed conflict, with some areas controlled by leftist guerrillas, right-wing paramilitary groups or drug lords, and with little government presence.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting butterflies in Colombia will also help protect its forests as well as other less likeable species, Huertas said.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2000 and 2019 Colombia lost nearly 2.8 million hectares of forest, equivalent to the area of Belgium, according to the National Department of Planning.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"wysiwug_image\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.large_embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"1dfa9c02-3f2f-45bb-8a4d-f8798901eb5f\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<figure class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/im-media.voltron.voanews.com\/Drupal\/01live-166\/styles\/sourced_737px_wide\/s3\/2021-06\/000_Was4247699.jpg?itok=GaQVNqaA\" alt=\"A Siproeta Ephaphus butterfly lands on the Finger of a man at the Botanic Garden Jose Celestino Mutis during a  exhibition in\u2026\" width=\"737\" height=\"515\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption>A Siproeta Ephaphus butterfly lands on the finger of a man at the Botanic Garden Jose Celestino Mutis during an exhibition in Bogota on Sept. 14, 2011.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA \u2014 BOGOTA, COLOMBIA &#8211;
