Evacuation orders for New York\u2019s Fire Island and some Connecticut coastal communities were issued Saturday with Hurricane Henri on course to come ashore midday Sunday, probably on\u00a0New York\u2019s\u00a0Long Island, rather than New England,\u00a0National Hurricane Center\u00a0forecasters said\u00a0Saturday night.<\/p>\n

Hurricane warnings stretched\u00a0about 400 kilometers\u00a0from New Bedford, Massachusetts, to New York\u2019s Fire Island, but\u00a0high winds and dangerous tidal surges were expected from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to the Jersey\u00a0shore,\u00a0a distance of\u00a0500\u00a0kilometers. Power outages could last a week or more, utilities warned.<\/p>\n

Saturday evening Henri\u00a0was\u00a0410\u00a0kilometers\u00a0south of Montauk Point,\u00a0Long Island, with\u00a0maximum winds of 120\u00a0kilometers per hour\u00a0and moving north-northeast at 29 kilometers per hour.<\/p>\n

Several popular summer vacation destinations are in Henri\u2019s path,\u00a0including Long Island, as well as Cape Cod and Martha\u2019s Vineyard in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

Connecticut Governor\u00a0Ned Lamont and Rhode Island Governor\u00a0Dan McKee both\u00a0told\u00a0their state\u2019s\u00a0residents to stay home through Monday morning.<\/p>\n

“We consider this a serious matter,” McKee said at a news conference.<\/p>\n

Massachusetts Governor\u00a0Charlie Baker\u00a0expressed relief Saturday that his state wouldn\u2019t take a direct hit but\u00a0joined Lamont and McKee is warning\u00a0that the wind and rain could lead to\u00a0serious damage and\u00a0lengthy power outages<\/p>\n

Hurricane, storm and storm surge watches and warnings have been declared for many locations along the East Coast of the U.S.\u00a0A storm surge of 1\u00a0meter to\u00a01.5 meters is possible from\u00a0New York City to Massachusetts, the hurricane center said.<\/p>\n
